What Is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is the term that describes gum disease in its early stage. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is characterized by inflammation and infection of the soft tissues that help anchor your teeth in your mouth. It is caused by the buildup of plaque, which produces bacterial toxins that irritate your mouth tissues. This can be due to poor oral hygiene, a sugary diet, and tobacco use.

Signs & Symptoms of Gingivitis

If you have gingivitis, your gums may appear red, swollen, and puffy. They may bleed easily and feel tender, especially when brushing and flossing. You may even have chronic bad breath.

While gingivitis is early-stage gum disease and usually won’t cause lasting damage, you must start taking preventive measures. If not, you’ll eventually deal with more severe gum disease that will result in gum recession, tooth decay, tooth loss, and deterioration of your jawbone. You can even experience health implications that go beyond the mouth.
