Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, allows you to be relaxed yet awake during your procedure. IV sedation lulls you into a deep sleep so you won’t even remember a thing when you wake up!
Does Sedation Dentistry Hurt?
If you’ve opted for nitrous oxide, all you have to do is gently inhale a few breaths of the gas and you’ll be feeling at ease in no time. IV sedation is administered by a needle, but many patients only feel a slight pinch upon insertion.
How Long Does It Take for the Effects to Wear Off?
Nitrous oxide wears off after just a few minutes, so you will be all clear to resume your day. IV sedation takes a few hours to wear off, so be sure to arrange a ride home and get some rest after your procedure is over.
Which Type of Sedation Is Best for Me?
If you’re okay with being awake and just need something to help ease your fears and numb some of the pain you may experience during your procedure, then nitrous oxide is a good choice. If you are especially fearful of the sights and sounds of the dentist’s office or think you’ll need some additional pain management help during your procedure, then IV sedation may be the right choice for you.
