Maintaining Your Dental Restorations
July 30, 2022 11:03 pmRestorative dentistry can replace missing teeth and improve the function of your smile. Have you recently had a dental restoration, such as a crown or dental implant? Here are a few tips on how you can maximize their longevity so you can enjoy a healthy, beautiful smile for many years!
1. Keep Up Your Oral Hygiene Routine
Maintaining a daily oral care routine, coupled with seeing your dentist at least twice a year, is essential in preserving your restorations and your oral health. Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time and floss every day.
2. Use a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush
Like your natural teeth, restorations can experience wear and tear if they encounter too many abrasive products. Gently brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush, preferably an electric toothbrush. Replace your toothbrush head every 3 months or earlier if the bristles appear frayed.
3. Curb Alcohol & Smoking
Cutting back or eliminating alcohol and tobacco is beneficial for both your oral health and your overall health. Acidic alcohol can stain and weaken your enamel and your restorations. Tobacco will stain your natural and artificial teeth while increasing your risk of gum disease, which can compromise the stability of your restorations.
4. Avoid Biting on Hard Objects
Don’t chew on pen caps, pencils, ice, packaging, hard candy, and unpopped popcorn kernels. Biting on a hard object can crack your dental restoration. You’ll have to get it repaired or replaced, which is time and money you could have saved.
