What Dental Issues Are Considered Emergencies?

When you experience a dental issue, sometimes it can be hard to know if it is an emergency. If you are experiencing extreme pain and/or profuse bleeding, you should seek medical attention right away. Otherwise, you may be able to wait a day or two before visiting our office. To help you decide whether you need emergency dental attention or not, read on to learn about a few scenarios!

Permanent Tooth Knocked Out

If you get an adult tooth knocked out, this is definitely considered a dental emergency. First, don’t panic: it's likely we can save the tooth if you get to our office within 15-60 minutes after the injury. Handle the tooth only by its chewing surface and, if possible, gently rinse the tooth with milk or water (just don't rub or scrub it with soap or a towel!) and attempt to reinsert it in its place in your mouth. If this isn’t possible, keep the tooth moist in a glass of milk while you seek dental attention. Call our office at immediately at 702-943-0900 for a same-day emergency appointment!

Toothache

While a toothache can certainly be painful, it isn't always an emergency. For example, if the pain is only mild, you may be able to wait a few days before coming in to our office. In the meantime, gently floss between the affected teeth and rinse your mouth with a cup of warm water mixed with a teaspoon of salt to ease the pain and clean the area. However, pain that is severe and intense requires immediate medical attention, especially if it is accompanied by any bumps on your gums, swelling in your face, or a fever. These are warning signs that you should get urgent dental care because you may have untreated decay or an infection that requires treatment.

Chipped Tooth

A chipped tooth can certainly be a disruption to your appearance, but it may not always be an emergency situation. Many chipped teeth are merely cosmetic issues. However, if the chip is causing pain, sensitivity or other problems in your mouth, call us immediately. There may also be a crack in your tooth that needs to be fixed before bacteria penetrates and damages your inner tooth.
