When to Take My Child to the Dentist

Baby celebrates first birthday with a cake and wears a hat with 1 on it

Many people don’t think their child needs to visit the dentist unless something is wrong or until they start school. The reality is that soon after your child’s first tooth comes in, they should start seeing a dentist. At what age will that happen? And how often do kids need to see a dentist?

A Baby's First Dental Appointment

A child's first baby tooth usually erupts around six months of age. We recommend scheduling their first dental checkup within six months of when this happens, or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. We'll check for signs of decay and answer any questions you have. These early visits are crucial for helping your child develop a positive association with visiting the dentist.

At Amber Hills Dental, we strive to help each child have a good experience at our Henderson dental office every time they visit. We have a children's play area, TVs and Netflix® in our treatment rooms, pillows, blankets, and prizes. And our friendly team has lots of experience helping kids feel comfortable and safe.

How Often Should Kids Visit the Dentist?

While baby teeth do eventually fall out, their health is still very important. Your child learns to speak and eat with these primary teeth, and they act as placeholders and guides for their underlying adult teeth. This means baby teeth require daily care, just like adult teeth! They also need routine preventive care.

Bring your child to see us at least twice a year for cleanings and exams. Your child will also benefit from our other preventive services. For example, a varnish of fluoride will help remineralize their teeth and strengthen them against tooth decay. Additionally, dental sealants are plastic coatings we can paint into the pits and grooves of their back teeth to protect them from food particles and decay.

If your child has a dental emergency, like a cracked tooth or severe tooth pain, bring them in as soon as you’re able. We offer same-day appointments to address your family's urgent dental needs! We are open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
