Tips to Reduce Dental Anxiety

If you have a fear of going to the dentist, you’re not alone! It's estimated that around 20% of Americans go to the dentist only when it’s truly necessary and around 8% avoid going at all due to fear. However, avoiding the dentist can result in poor oral health and negatively affect your overall health so regular visits are essential! We understand that dealing with anxiety is not easy. Here are some tips that can help you manage it.

Use Relaxation Techniques

Before your appointment, take a moment to prepare your mind. There are various ways you can do this. Some patients find it helpful to do meditation, journaling, or calming yoga. You can also try something as simple as practicing deep breathing, which is closing your eyes and taking deep controlled breaths. Test out different activities and see what works best for you. Whatever you choose, ideally it would be best if the activity can help slow down your heartbeat and relax your muscles.

Sedation and Medications

If at-home preparation isn’t enough, that’s okay! Speak with your dentist about different sedation options like nitrous oxide that can help you stay more calm. Oral medications may be prescribed by a dentist or physician to help with anxiety. A small dose can typically be taken before the dental appointment. In more extreme cases, IV sedation might be the best solution for you. In such cases, you will fall asleep and have no recollection of your dental procedures. Consult with your dentist to see which option is right for you.

Find the Right Dentist

Matching yourself with the right dentist can make a big difference and allow you to feel more confident going in for an appointment. Speak with the dental office and see if they have experience helping people with dental anxiety. The right dentist should be able to offer personalized care for your specific stressors and present some techniques or solutions to help you relax.
