How to Step Up Your Dental Hygiene Routine

Maintaining a good dental hygiene routine is crucial for strong teeth and gums. Below, we share simple ways to step up your oral hygiene so you can promote a healthier smile!

Regularly Replace Your Toothbrush

Did you know that it is recommended to get a new toothbrush every three to four months? Brush using a soft-bristled toothbrush, which will be gentle on your teeth and gums while still removing plaque and food particles. If you currently use a manual toothbrush, consider investing in an electric toothbrush that has a built-in timer so you’re more likely to brush for two minutes each time. Plus, electric toothbrushes are easy to use and can make brushing more enjoyable.

Floss Every Day

While brushing cleans the outer surfaces of your teeth, flossing cleans the tight spaces between them and under your gums. Make it a habit to floss at least once a day! The most effective way to floss is to gently slide the floss between each tooth, forming a "C" shape, and move it up and down to remove plaque and food particles. If you find traditional floss challenging, consider using floss picks, interdental brushes, or a water flosser.

Drink Water

Drinking enough water throughout the day will allow your mouth to create sufficient saliva. Saliva helps remineralize your teeth to reinforce them against sensitivity and tooth decay. It also keeps your soft tissues moist, which is more comfortable and reduces your risk of infection and mouth sores.

Rinse with Mouthwash & Chew Sugar-Free Gum

Rinsing with mouthwash, whether it be fluoridated mouthwash or an alcohol-free antibacterial mouthwash, and chewing sugar-free gum after meals can freshen your breath while boosting your oral health. However, remember that mouthwash and chewing gum are not substitutes for daily brushing and flossing. They are merely supplemental to your oral care routine.
