Are Dental Expenses Tax-Deductible?

Dental expenses can be a significant cost for many people, especially for patients who require extensive dental work or who chronically experience dental disease. It is not uncommon for dental expenses to prevent individuals from seeking out necessary dental care. Some patients can benefit from including their eligible dental expenses in their itemized deductions on their taxes.

Tax-Deductible Dental Services

Not all dental expenses are tax-deductible. To be deductible, the expenses must be considered qualified medical expenses by the IRS. This means that the expenses must be primarily for the prevention or treatment of a medical condition, as opposed to being purely cosmetic. Additionally, your total medical and dental expenses being claimed must exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.

Here are examples of what could potentially be tax-deductible:

  • Routine Dental Cleanings
  • Dental Fillings
  • Dentures
  • Dental Crowns
  • Root Canal Therapy

Though these dental services can qualify, one important factor to consider is whether you are eligible to itemize your deductions or if you should just take the standard deduction. If you would benefit from itemizing your deductions, you can include qualified medical expenses on your tax return as part of your itemized deductions. However, if you take the standard deduction, you cannot deduct any medical expenses.

Only medical expenses paid for during the past year can count towards your tax deduction. Additionally, you cannot claim anything that you paid for or will be reimbursed for with a flexible spending account.
